This book was billed as “Mulan meets The Song of Achilles,” which only seemed to hold for the first third or so. About halfway through the book, the entire tone shifted and was substantially darker. It was challenging to keep reading, and the end was jarring and uncomfortable. It was good, but certainly not lighthearted or romantic.
